Johnson Wu was born in 1959 in the colourful city of Shanghai, China. After graduate school, Mr. Wu went on to study at the Shanghai Fine Arts College, graduating in 1977. From this time on, Mr. Wu began perfecting his style, images with bold and brilliant colours literally jumping off his canvases. He began exhibiting his work in 1986. Mr. Wu continued to make his way within the art world with various organizations as a Senior Art Designer. He is also an Associate Signature Status member of the Federation of Canadian Artist (AFCA). Mr. Wu came to Canada in 1997 as an instructor in art and continues to teach painting at his studio in Vancouver.
I was born and raised in the busy commercial center of Shanghai, China – a way of life which I found uninspiring to the style of art which I longed to produce. Then, as an immigrant, I came to Canada where freedom of thought and expression, combined with the natural beauty of this land, offer an artistic paradise,
Here – man’s creations sit in the lap of nature’s wonders
Here – high-rise sit obediently at the foot of high peak
Here – matures serenity holds us all in awe
Now the rest is up to me – to put this beauty onto canvas with truth and with respect – in a style that I hope pleases you, the viewer. I sincerely hope that this exhibition reflects how I feel about my new country and that my style mirrors the harmony I feel with this beautiful land.
